Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the ability to contest particular decisions from the chair umpire, following the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
